What objects are not allowed as hand luggage and/or hold luggage?

The European Union has compiled lists of objects which may not be included in hand and/or hold luggage.

The following objects are not allowed, neither as hand luggage nor as hold luggage:

  • Explosives, such as detonators, fuses, granades, mines and eplosive devices
  • Gases: propane, butane
  • Flammable liquids, such as petrol, methanol
  • Flammable solids and reactive solids such as magnesium, firelighters, fireworks, flares
  • Oxidation agents and organic peroxides such as bleach, chassis repair kits
  • Toxic or contagious substances such as rat poison, contaminated blood
  • Radioactive material such as medical or commercial isotopes
  • Corrosive materials such as mercury, vehicle batteries
  • Components of vehicle fuel systems which have contained fuel
  • Electronic transportation devices such as Segways, E-bikes, hoverboards, airbords, oxboards, E-skates, waveboards and U-runners
  • Any lithium powered device above 160 Watt-hour (excluding electric mobility aids)


The following objects are not allowed as hold luggage:

  • - Powerbanks
  • - External battery packs
  • - Spare batteries
  • - Loose lithium batteries
  • - Electric smoking devices
  • - Matches or lighters

The following objects are not allowed as hand luggage:
a. Firearms and guns
Any article capable, or appearing capable, of discharging a projectile or causing injury, such as:

  • All firearms (pistols, revolvers, rifles, etc.)
  • Replica and imitation firearms
  • Components of firearms (with the exception of telescopic viewers and sights)
  • Air pistols, air rifles and shotguns
  • Flare guns
  • Starter guns
  • All types of toy firearms
  • Ball bearing guns
  • Industrial bolt and nail guns
  • Crossbows
  • Catapults
  • Harpoons and spear guns
  • Animal humane killers
  • Stun or shocking devices, e.g. cattle prods, ballistic energy conducted weapons
  • Lighters shaped like a firearm

b. Pointed / sharp weapons & sharp objects
Articles with points or sharp edges which can cause injury, such as: 

  • Axes and hatchets
  • Arrows and darts
  • Crampons
  • Harpoons and spears
  • Ice axes and ice picks
  • Ice skates
  • Flick knives or stilettos with a blade of any length
  • Knives, including ceremonial knives, with a blade longer than 6 cm, made from metal or any other material strong enough to be used as a weapon
  • Meat cleavers
  • Machetes
  • Open razors and blades (excluding safety or disposable razors with blades enclosed in cartridge)
  • Sables, swords and daggers
  • Scalpels
  • Scissors with blades longer than 6 cm
  • Ski and walking poles
  • Throwing stars
  • Tools that can be used as a pointed or cutting weapon, e.g. drills and drill bits
  • Stanley knives, tool lives, all types of saws, screwdrivers, crowbars
  • Hammers, pliers, wrenches and spammers, blow torches

c. Blunt objects
Any blunt object which can cause injury, such as:

  • Baseball bats and softball bats
  • Rigid or flexible clubs or batons, e.g. billy clubs, blackjacks, truncheons
  • Cricket bats
  • Golf clubs
  • Hockey sticks
  • Lacrosse sticks
  • Kayak and canoe paddles
  • Skateboards
  • Billiard, snooker and pool cues
  • Fishing rods
  • Martial arts equipment, e.g. knuckledusters, clubs, coshes, rice flails, num-chucks
  • Kubatons, kubasaunts

d. Explosives and flammable substances
Any explosive or highly combustible substance which poses a risk to the health of passengers and crew or the safety of the aircraft or property, such as:

  • Ammunition
  • Blasting caps
  • Detonators and fuses
  • Explosives and explosive devices
  • Replica or imitation explosives and explosive devices
  • Mines and other explosive military material
  • Grenades of all types
  • Gas and gas containers, e.g. butane, propane, acetylene, large volumes of oxygen.
  • Fireworks and flares in any form (including party poppers and caps for toy guns)
  • Non-safety matches
  • Smoke grenades or smoke cartridges
  • Flammable liquid fuel, e.g. petrol, diesel, lighter fuel, alcohol, ethanol
  • Aerosol spray paints
  • Turpentine and paint thinner
  • Alcoholic beverages exceeding 70% volume (140% proof)

e. Chemical and toxic substances
Any chemical or toxic substance which poses a risk to the health of passengers and crew or the safety of the aircraft or property, such as: 

  • Acids and alkalis, e.g. wet batteries
  • Corrosive or bleaching substances, e.g. mercury, chlorine
  • Incapacitating substances in spray cans, e.g. mace, pepper spray, teargas
  • Radioactive material such as medical or commercial isotopes
  • Poisons
  • Infectious or biological hazardous material, e.g. infected blood, bacteria and viruses
  • Material capable of spontaneous ignition or combustion
  • Fire extinguishers
